A survey commissioned by the City of Swan found 23 per cent of local businesses have trouble finding suitable staff, and 17 per cent plan to retrain or upskill existing staff to fill currents gaps.

More than 1500 businesses from different industries in the City were surveyed about their workforce to help inform a localised skills gap analysis. The skills gap analysis aims to examine the skills and occupations required for major and emerging industries, and their subsequent needs for training development and skilled worker attraction.

City of Swan Business and Tourism Services Manager Kylie Cugini said now, more than ever, we need community and industry to work together to improve our workforce potential and support business growth.

“The skills gap analysis will help the City assess the gaps and trends, put in place strategies and actions to support local employers and their training demands, and encourage prospective investment into the region,” Kylie said.

The analysis also found that:

  • 23 per cent of local businesses reported an increase in the number of employees, and

  • 41 per cent of local businesses had planned to employ new staff in 2021.

Kylie said she hoped that while working through the skills gap analysis, the economic sustainability of our community would strengthen.

Thanks to those businesses who contributed to the survey and consultations. The analysis will be finalised and released shortly.

Participants who completed the survey went into the draw to win a set of earbuds. Congratulations to Sue McMillian from Creation Design, specialists in quality custom-built furniture based in Malaga, who won the prize presented by Business Development Officer Wiki Power.
