The Advocacy Action Plan outlines the positive outcomes Council is seeking for the Bayside community from the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Stage One: Cheltenham to Box Hill.
The advocacy priorities presented in the Draft Plan are aligned with the Community Vision 2050 and Council adopted Strategic Plans and Policies.
Advocacy for strong outcomes
We are providing strong input to the Suburban Rail Loop Authority throughout the various stages of the process to advocate on behalf of the Bayside community.
We want to minimise impacts from the construction of the new station and maximise the opportunity to improve sustainable, efficient, and connected public transport across and onward from Bayside.
The key objectives of the advocacy action plan are:
- Protecting community amenity during the various stages of construction
- Delivering an integrated transport system
- Delivering a precinct that responds to the challenges of the future
- Effective collaboration and transparent communication and engagement
- Maximising economic and social benefits
Council will be making a submission on the SRLA Environmental Effects Statement and Draft Planning Scheme Amendment as part of the exhibition process.
Understanding climate impact of the project and mitigation strategies are also a priority for Council in response to our Climate Emergency Action Plan.
Kingston’s alternative design for the SRL Station and Precinct
The City of Kingston has developed alternative plans for the Cheltenham SRL station precinct. The proposal includes improvements to ensure the project:
- Integrates parkland with the station/development area to retain views and green space
- Creates better pedestrian connections from Highett to Cheltenham and within the park, station and Southland areas of the precinct
- Provides convenient pick-up and drop-off locations
- Improves bus connections
- Includes additional station entries and an underground connection from Southland precinct to the new SRL station
- Creates more open spaces including a market square and urban common within the station precinct
- Additional open space within the former Highett Gasworks site
- Provides additional on-street parking/loading
- Integrates a new concept plan for Sir William Fry Reserve featuring a new skate park, open space, reshaped lake, trees, paths, dog park and BBQs
- Provides opportunities for community services such as a state-of-the-art library
- Includes a bus-friendly ‘loop road’ plus traffic lights at Nepean Highway/ Enright Street
