More than 60 of Australia’s most promising female students are in Canberra to explore their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) at the Curious Minds Summer Camp.
Girls in Years 9 and 10 are participating in an intensive academic camp over four days, and over the next six months will receive one-on-one mentoring and coaching from a woman working in a STEM field.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan said Australia’s future economy depends on a successful STEM-enabled workforce.
“The program encourages high-potential young women who might have limited opportunities to challenge themselves and pursue a career in STEM,” Mr Tehan said.
“Some of the girls attending the camp have travelled all the way from the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Tasmania.
“These girls will have a full itinerary of ‘supercharged sessions’, guest lectures, excursions and learning about life on the Australian National University campus.
“The Curious Minds program engages students with a community of strong female STEM thinkers, who share many of the same passions and interests as them.”
Mr Tehan said feedback from past participants showed they learnt new skills and gained the confidence to continue studying STEM subjects beyond secondary school.
“The Australian Government has dedicated $2.35 million to continue to operate and expand the Curious Minds program.”
