Tasmania’s lowest unemployment rate on record

Tasmania’s unemployment rate has hit a new record low, with unemployment falling to 3.7 per cent – less than half of what it was when we were first elected in 2014, and much less than the horrific high of 8.8 per cent seen under the disastrous Labor-Green government.

This is a fantastic result and shows the strength of Tasmania’s economy as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic and see families achieve greater job security and opportunity. Clearly, businesses are investing and employing more Tasmanians to meet demand and grow. We now have jobs looking for people.

Employment has continued to grow strongly, with 264,200 Tasmanians in jobs, which is over 6,000 more than at the beginning of the pandemic, and 29,600 more than when we came to Government in 2014.

This news comes on top of yesterday’s Wage Price Index (WPI) data released by the ABS, which showed that Tasmania’s wages were 2.9 per cent higher when compared to the level of the WPI in June 2020 – the equal strongest growth in the country.

We will continue to deliver our Plan to strengthen Tasmania’s future with our key focus on the health and safety of Tasmanians, while keeping our economy strong and creating jobs, right around the State.
