Tasmanian arts organisations key to growing vibrant sector

Elise Archer, Minister for the Arts

Our Government is a strong supporter of the many arts organisations that operate across Tasmania, both large and small.

A strong and varied network of arts organisations is vital to ensuring the overall vibrancy and viability of our cultural and creative community, and to building Tasmania’s reputation as the home of a thriving arts sector.

I am pleased to announce that 27 arts organisations will share in grant funds of more than $3.7 million through Arts Tasmania’s recent funding rounds, to deliver high-quality activities across Tasmania throughout 2023.

Funded activities will provide invaluable paid employment and professional development opportunities for more than 900 artists and arts workers, connect our local communities through storytelling, and create works that challenge and inspire audiences across the State.

Supported organisations include:

  • emerging organisation ROOKE Productions, in Northern Tasmania, will receive support to engage regional artists and audiences by creating new works with a focus on contemporary circus and cabaret;
  • Music Tasmania will receive funds of $80,000 towards developing and supporting the Tasmanian music industry through performance opportunities, professional development activities and industry development events;
  • Big HART Inc. will receive funding towards activating a new arts and community space in Wynyard on the North West Coast. This space will be used as a base for the organisation’s activities across Tasmania in 2023, which include performances and workshops;
  • In Hobart, Archipelago Productions, will receive funds of $78,000 towards employing Tasmanian creatives to present new and challenging contemporary theatre works to Tasmanian audiences in 2023; and
  • The Terror Australia Readers and Writers Festival, in Southern Tasmania, will receive $39,000 to deliver targeted professional development opportunities for Tasmanian writers to develop skills, knowledge, and connections.

Organisations with existing multi-year funding agreements in place for activities in 2023 include Assembly 197, Constance ARI and Terrapin Puppet Theatre Ltd.

This round also sees support given to five organisations delivering activities for young people in 2023, including the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, DRILL Performance Company and the Cygnet Community Arts Council.
