Tasmanian business confidence leading nation

Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

The December 2023 NAB Monthly Business Survey released today shows that the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s long-term plan for Tasmania is working, as Tasmania leads the nation in business confidence and business conditions.

Notably Tasmania was the only state to experience a positive trend in business confidence.

The latest data is on the back of ABS data that showed Tasmania had recently achieved a record low unemployment rate.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said this data shows the Government’s long-term plan of partnering with businesses is benefiting Tasmanians.

“It is pleasing to see that despite significant interest rate rises, global inflationary pressures and national economic headwinds, our Liberal Government has created the conditions Tasmanian businesses need to succeed,” Premier Rockliff said.

“We will always back in business to lead the economic development opportunities Tasmanians need.

“We understand that Tasmanians are doing it tough, battling inflation and cost of living pressures. That’s why it is more important than ever that there are employment opportunities and job numbers are strong in Tasmania.

“Our Government has worked with businesses to create over 50,000 more jobs since we took office, and we know how important each one of these jobs are to Tasmanians.”

Treasurer, Michael Ferguson, welcomed the NAB report on the back of recent State Final Demand (SFD) and Gross State Product (GSP) data released late last year.

“We know that economic development comes from government working together with business, and we will continue to deliver the conditions Tasmanian businesses need to employ more Tasmanians,” Treasurer Ferguson said.

“Recent ABS data showed the Tasmanian SFD is one of the nation’s leaders on the back of strong business investment, and these confidence and conditions figures back that in.

“While the Liberals are growing the economy and creating jobs, the divided Labor Party continue their reckless pursuit of talking Tasmania down and deliberately trying to harm the confidence of businesses in the state to score worthless political points.

“Our Government is getting on with the job of growing our economy, building confidence and delivering the biggest infrastructure agenda in Tasmania’s history that secures jobs for years to come.

“It’s only a strong economy that enables Tasmanians to put a roof over their head, put food on the table and pay their bills.”
