Guy Barnett,Minister for Trade

The Tasmanian Liberal Government congratulates True South Seafood for taking out the national Sustainability Award at the Australian Export and Investment Awards tonight.

After recently winning the Tasmanian Export Award for the same category, True South Seafood has clearly shown its sustainability credentials to be nation-leading, especially during COVID-19.

True South Seafood is supplier of premium Tasmanian, and New Zealand wild caught live abalone and Pāua, as well as being the largest exporter of sea urchin roe from the State.

The company’s approach is a win-win for Tasmania and helping the environment and the industry by restoring marine ecosystems, including through reducing invasive urchin species, and driving additional jobs and boosting market diversification.

With its already established markets in Australia, the United States, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Taiwan – True South Seafood also plans to open a facility to produce more value-added products from urchins and abalone in 2022 and beyond.

This includes plans to produce an organic fertiliser and soil conditioner, created using invasive urchin species waste and made using 100 per cent renewable energy.

The Tasmanian Government congratulates True South Seafood on this award and all the other finalists tonight.
