Tasmanian pharmacy professional wins big at national awards

Guy Barnett, Minister for Health

A Tasmanian pharmacy professional was recognised at the Society of Hospital Pharmacy of Australia’s national awards over the weekend, bringing home one of the big awards.

Statewide Pharmacy Technician Manager Tara Fisher-Clayson was recognised as Hospital Pharmacy Technician of the year for providing exceptional executive and operational leadership overseeing the statewide pharmacy technician workforce.

Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, congratulated Tara and praised the contribution of Tasmania’s talented and hard-working pharmacy workforce more broadly.

“I would like to congratulate Tara for being recognised with this prestigious national award for her outstanding work,” said Minister Barnett.

“Tasmania is leading the way when it comes to fostering a strong hospital pharmacy workforce, with this year’s success at the Hospital Pharmacy awards following similar recognition in 2022.

“Hospital pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are vital to providing high-quality patient care to ensure Tasmanians have the healthcare system they deserve.”

Tara oversaw the addition of 30 full-time equivalent staff last year to the pharmacy technician workforce.

This initiative was as part of the Rockliff Liberal Government’s $4.7 million investment to assign a technician to each acute inpatient ward in our four major public hospitals.

Tara is also leading important workforce initiatives including developing plans for a new Advanced Pharmacy Technician Pilot Program which will roll out later this year.

“This is the fourth time in four years a Tasmanian pharmacy technician has won this national award – a proud achievement for Tasmania and a proud achievement for Tara,” said Minister Barnett.
