Tasmanians sick of secrecy

Tasmanian Labor
  • Majority of Tasmanians concerned about government secrecy
  • Liberals reflex action is to hide information
  • Peter Gutwein’s Secret State must end
  • A new survey released today shows rising concern in the Tasmanian community about the secrecy of the Liberal Government.

Shadow Attorney General Ella Haddad said Tasmanians are losing patience with the government’s determination to hide information that should be publicly available.

“There is no question that under Peter Gutwein, Tasmania has become the Secret State.

“The Australia Institute survey shows Tasmanians are sick of it, and won’t accept a government that refuses to explain its actions.

“Tasmanians expect and deserve to understand the basis of decision making during the COVID-19 pandemic – including why certain restrictions are in place, and what businesses have benefited from government grants.”

Ms Haddad said the concern goes much further, with survey results showing more than two-thirds of Tasmanians concerned about secrecy on multiple fronts:

    • 66% want reform to tackle perceived or actual corruption
    • 69% want the government to reform laws around disclosure of political donations
    • 67% want to information released to explain why RTI applications are refused
