Teen charged following aggravated break and enter, car stolen

A teen has been charged following an aggravated break, enter and steal at Nelson Bay overnight.

About 1.20am today (Saturday 30 December 2023), officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were patrolling Bagnalls Beach Road, Corlette, when they attempted to stop a Hyundai i30.

Police observed the Hyundai and another vehicle take off at high speed, both vehicles evading police.

Following inquiries, the Hyundai was identified as one of two vehicles stolen from a home in Christmas Bush Avenue, Nelson Bay.

The Hyundai was located a short time later, crashed on the side of Sandy Point Road. Police arrested the sole occupant of the vehicle – a 16-year-old boy – and he was taken to Maitland Police Station.

The teen was charged with:

• Aggravated Break and Enter w/i – knowing person there.

• Take and Drive Conveyance w/o consent of owner.

• Learner not accompanied by driver

• Special category driver drive with special range PCA – 1st offence

• Possess prohibited drug

He was refused bail to appear before a local court today (Saturday 30 December 2023).

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for witnesses that may have seen the second vehicle, a black Hyundai i30 with NSW registration IB 55 99. Anyone who may have information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
