NT Government

Two Territory musos will take to the stage at BASSINTHEGRASS at Darwin’s iconic Mindil Beach on 20 May 2023 after winning a coveted spot to perform at the Territory’s biggest music festival.

Bella Maree, and Prayer Corby and her four-piece band, have taken out the Territory Artists Competition, and will perform on a line-up that features some of Australia’s biggest musical acts.

Bella Maree, 25, is a musician/singer-songwriter based in Darwin. Inspired by the likes of Billie Eilish, Jessie Reyez and Vera Blue, Bella Maree has created a unique sound that infuses soulful electropop with contemporary R&B influences. She recently made it to the top 40 in Australian Idol from a pool of more than 5000 entrants.

Prayer Corby , 22, is a Darwin born-and-raised singer-songwriter with a story to tell. She has sung backing vocals at some amazing festivals, such as Byron Bay Bluesfest and Garma Festival, and performed her own songs at events such as Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival.

The Territory Artists Competition was judged by industry representatives from Music NT, LACT Entertainment and Northern Territory Major Events Company. All agreed the level of talent evident in the applications was incredible.

Applicants were judged on quality, genre, capability, development, experience and ability to perform, and the winners showed they had plenty to offer fans at BASSINTHEGRASS.

Final Release BASSINTHEGRASS tickets are on sale now for $140, plus booking fee. Visit [https://www.bassinthegrass.com.au]

Quotes from Minister for Major Events, Paul Kirby:

“With a stellar line-up this year, BASSINTHEGRASS is a must-do music festival and, for Territory artists and musicians, it is an incredible opportunity to perform in front of thousands of Territory and interstate music lovers.

“The Territory Artists Competition helps our home-grown talent not only find new fans, but also have their music exposed to industry leaders.”

Quotes from Bella Maree:

“Since there’s only two Territory artists being selected, it feels so incredible to be chosen. I wasn’t expecting it at all and I feel honoured. It will be me playing my original songs with a drummer, bringing what I’ve been doing in the studio to a live setting.”

“I’m really stoked to be on the line-up with all these other great artists and also performing at a festival that I really love attending.”

Quotes from Prayer Corby:

“Honestly I’m beside myself and I didn’t think I was going to get very far and just thought I’d have a go and put an application in, I’m still a bit taken aback that I’ve secured a spot.

“It means a lot, I’ve been to a lot of the BASSINTHEGRASS festivals before and I’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere and music, it’s a pretty big honour. I’m really thankful.

“All of the music that I’ll be performing are songs that I have not released yet but hopefully one single will be released this year.”
