A third man has been charged following an investigation into the alleged fraudulent transactions of vehicles across NSW.
In May 2020, detectives from the Financial Crimes Squad’s Motor Unit, with assistance from Kings Cross Police Area Command, established Strike Force Bijous to investigate the fraudulent acquisition and on-sale of rental vehicles across NSW.
During the investigation, police received information that 19 vehicles, leased from five separate car rental companies in Sydney, had been sold via websites and online marketplaces.
The alleged fraudulent transactions has an estimated combined value of more than $750,000.
Following extensive inquiries, a 26-year-old man was arrested by Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers at Melbourne International Airport after attempting to board a flight to India on Tuesday 28 July 2020.
The man, who is an Indian national, was taken to Broadmeadow Police Station by Victoria Police (VICPOL) officers and charged by virtue of an interstate warrant for fraud-related offences.
He appeared at Broadmeadow Magistrates Court, where NSW Police Force detectives applied for, and were granted, his extradition to NSW.
The man was escorted to Wagga Wagga Police Station and charged with 35 offences including; 16 counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, 16 counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime intent to conceal, two counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, and deal with property proceeds of crime => $100000.
Following further inquiries, a 31-year-old man was also arrested by AFP officers at Melbourne International Airport after attempting to board a flight to India on Tuesday 15 September 2020.
The man, who is also an Indian national, was taken to Broadmeadow Police Station by VICPOL officers and charged with an interstate warrant for fraud-related offences.
He appeared at Broadmeadow Magistrates Court, where NSW Police Force detectives applied for, and were granted, his extradition to NSW.
The man was escorted to NSW and charged with 21 offences including; 10 counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception, dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, nine counts of larceny as bailee (property value greater than $15,000) and larceny as bailee (property value between $5,000 and $15,000).
Both men will face Central Local Court today (Thursday 8 April 2021).
About 7.30am today (Thursday 8 April 2021), officers attached to Financial Crimes Squad’s Motor Unit, arrested a 39-year-old man at home on Australia Street, Sydney Olympic Park.
During a search of the property, police located several hard drives, phones, credit cards and documents. They will undergo forensic examination.
The man was taken to Auburn Police Station where he has since been charged with dealing in the proceeds of crime; knowingly direct activities of criminal group; and dishonestly obtain financial advantage or cause disadvantage by deception.
He was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court tomorrow (Friday 9 April 2021).
