Thousands of people gathered in the City of Logan today to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
The NAIDOC Flag Raising and Family Fun Day at Gould Adams Park, Kingston
Ceremony saw the traditional smoking ceremony followed by the raising of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Australian flags.
Guest speaker, Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Regional Manager Robyn Kerr spoke of the need for all Australians to work together towards reconciliation and improving indigenous outcomes.
This year’s theme for NAIDOC is VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH.
It emphasises the need for indigenous languages to be preserved and the need for indigenous voices to be heard in aspects of Australian life.
The Yugambeh Museum, Language and Heritage Research Centre at Beenleigh records and promotes the traditional knowledge of our region, especially the local Yugambeh language.
Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan is a two-year plan which outlines Council’s commitment to build respect, strengthen relationships and enhance opportunities with Logan’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
The city also supports a number of indigenous-based businesses and services.
