Thousands of revellers head to NAFA opening weekend

Almost 14,000 people have poured through the gates for the first weekend of the award-winning North Australian Festival of Arts.

The huge run of NAFA activities included Wil Anderson’s Wiluminate, Bambarra-ma Dariburu (It’s good to make good), and Ross Wilson and the Peaceniks’ Celebrating 50 years of Eagle Rock.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the turnout showed just how much residents and visitors valued having a nationally-renowned arts festival in the heart of Townsville.

“NAFA is now a household name, with residents waiting all year to head along to the huge variety of shows available during the festival,” Cr Hill said.

“As a Council we’re continuously focused on growing the city’s capacity as an arts centre, especially when it comes to delivering international-standard signature events and providing opportunities for the growth of local artists.

“This first weekend of NAFA has included some big names, including Wil Anderson and Ross Wilson, along with some local legends like Deborah O’Toole and The Bridge Project actors from TheatreiNQ.”

Cr Hill said the atmosphere across the city was electric as visitors poured into the region for NAFA and other major events.

“NAFA is a great way to kickstart the height of our events season ahead of events like Supercars, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and Ephemera: Seaside Sculptures,” she said.

Cr Hill said there was still a lot on for the rest of the NAFA program.

“Next weekend will feature the Youth Arts Hub for the first time, which will feature three days of workshops, activities and performances designed by young people for young people. This great initiative is being spearheaded by our Townsville Youth Council, and I’m pleased to see their strong success in booking out almost all of their free activities,” she said.

“We know that accessibility is essential, which is why we’ve included Auslan-interpreted performances throughout NAFA 2023.

“I can’t wait to see what else NAFA has in store during the next two weeks. Make sure you get in early to book your tickets now to avoid disappointment.”

NAFA 2023 runs until Sunday 9 July. Tickets are available on the NAFA website or by calling 4417 5127.
