Three men have been charged with possessing an unauthorised firearm after allegedly brandishing a gel-blaster firearm on Monday afternoon.
About 1.30pm on Monday 14 August 2023, police were called to Eight Mile Lane, Glenugie, after a member of the public reportedly saw a man with a gun pointed to his head.
Police from Coffs/Clarence Police District attended and spoke with three men before locating a gel-blaster firearm underneath a nearby vehicle.
Following inquiries, police identified that the men had allegedly been using the firearm as a prop in a series of music videos.
The firearm was seized and all three were issued Court Attendance Notices for the charge of possess unauthorised firearm.
The men, aged between 19 and 20, are due to appear before Grafton Local Court on Monday 9 October 2023.
Coffs/Clarence Police District Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector Guy Flaherty, said the community needed to be reminded that gel-blaster firearms are illegal.
“Make no mistake, gel-blaster firearms are not toys – they are dangerous and are illegal for several reasons,” Det Ch/Insp Flaherty said.
“Possessing a gel-blaster – or any unregistered firearm – places you at risk of criminal charges, with the possibility of lengthy sentences for those caught.”
Detective Chief Inspector Flaherty said the National Firearms Amnesty enables those with gel-blasters or other firearms to dispose of them safely.
“The amnesty allows for any firearms, or firearm related articles, to be surrendered to a police station without fear of prosecution,” Det Ch/Insp Flaherty said.
“Just contact your local police station prior to attending and ensure the firearm is in a bag or wrapped in a blanket.”
