Tobruk change room receives Changing Places accreditation

The new standalone disabled adult change room at the recently redeveloped Tobruk Memorial Baths has received its Changing Places accreditation.

The change room is one of only two Changing Places accredited facilities in the city. It is designed to help people with a profound disability and it includes a mobility hoist and an adult-sized adjustable change table.

The Changing Places organisation was launched in 2006 to provide facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Council’s Sport and Recreation Chairperson Maurie Soars said Council set high standards for the Tobruk change room.

“Great facilities for people with disabilities were a priority in our plans and this change room was at the top of the list,” Cr Soars said.

“The change room includes an adult-sized adjustable change table and a mobility hoist. It has a central toilet and an automatic door to make it accessible for people who need wheelchairs, walkers or walking sticks.

“Council planned the change room with a view to securing the Changing Places status so this is welcome recognition.”

The adult change room is accessible to anyone that is visiting The Strand and needs to use it.

Local councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the change room is a welcome addition to her division and the wider community.

“Council is committed to promoting a more active community and this facility is great for people with disabilities, their families, friends and carers,” Cr Greaney said.

“Changing Places accredited facilities can accommodate a range of disabilities so this room gives more people an opportunity to exercise or relax in the pools.

“It is wonderful to receive this accreditation and it is a great reward for everyone who worked on the project.”

The Tobruk Memorial Baths on The Strand re-opened in late July following an $11.3 million redevelopment.

The project included the construction of new 50-metre, learn-to-swim and toddler pools as well as an updated filtration system, new shade structures and refurbished facilities. The new 50-metre and learn-to swim pools include disability ramps allowing for easier access for those who need it.
