Tower crane marks next phase in Canberra Hospital Expansion

The next stage of the $624 million Canberra Hospital Expansion – which will transform healthcare services for generations of Canberrans – has begun with the installation of the first of two electric tower cranes.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the construction stage will support about 500 jobs, helping to turbo-charge the Territory’s economic recovery from COVID-19.

“The Canberra Hospital Expansion represents a record investment in the future of our health system,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

“Now that the demolition and excavation stage is complete, construction of the state-of-the-art, eight-storey Critical Services Building is getting underway.

“This first tower crane is a symbol of the massive effort required to bring this hospital expansion to life.

“The Canberra Hospital Expansion is one key part of our plan to ensure all Canberrans have access to the health services they need, when they need them.

“We are grateful for the engagement of the Garran community in this important project, and especially Garran Primary School students and teachers, who have short-listed names for the two cranes for Canberrans to vote on.”

Canberrans can help “Name the Cranes” by voting on the shortlist of 10 suggestions, which will be published on the ACT Government’s YourSay website later this month. Winning names will be announced in April.
