Townsville motorcycle club receives $294,612 disaster funding for repairs

Townsville Motorcycle Club will have vital repairs made to its flood-damaged track and amenities at Woodstock after receiving $294,612 in funding.

Repairs to the club facilities will be jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) through the $20 million Community and Recreational Assets program.

“Community spirit and solidarity are so important during recovery and sport can help with that,” Minister Littleproud said.

“All levels of government have worked together to get these facilities up and running again to ensure they will serve the community and surrounding region for years to come.

“The Government is committed to supporting drought, flood, storm and fire affected communities, and will stand shoulder to shoulder with them until the job is done.

Queensland Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said DRFA was seeing facilities restored at approximately 45 not-for-profit sport and recreation organisations across the Townsville, Richmond, McKinlay, Flinders Hinchinbrook and Cloncurry council regions.

“Whilst North Queenslanders are tough, it’s our job as governments to provide the support to help them when disaster strikes,” said Mr de Brenni.

“This repair work will utilise local tradies, supporting jobs and providing a shot in the arm to the Townsville economy at this tough time.”

Townsville Motorcycle Club President Russell Fabbro said the financial relief has provided a massive boost to the club and its members.

“We were faced with an impossible rebuilding phase until this funding came through, after the club sustained significant damage as a result of the 2019 floods,” said Mr Fabbro.

“The committee and volunteer members rallied together and, after a monumental effort, were able to once again reopen the facility.

“But damage to the club’s infrastructure meant that some key parts of the club were unable to operate at full capacity and some sections remain closed, so this funding will help us get those works completed.”
