Turning manure into money

The Hon David Littleproud MP
Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management
  • $2.95 million to increase profits with high-tech manure and nitrogen management
  • Project being delivered under the round two of the Smart Farming Partnerships
  • Project uses new technology including robotic growth accelerators
  • The Morrison-McCormack Government is investing $2.95 million in a project that maximises the benefits of manure products for agriculture and the environment.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said the project would be led by animal health company Scolexia and would increase farm profits with high-tech manure and nitrogen management.

“This project could soon be turning manure into money,” Minister Littleproud said.

“The project uses cutting-edge techniques such as robotic growth accelerator trials, photographic 3D scanning of nutrients and solid separation technology.

“This could see farmers produce improved fertilisers and soil improvers from manure products.

“It could also see more farmers generating power from biogas, cutting carbon emissions.

“This has big potential and could be applied in many animal farming operations.

“The technology will be trialled in farms in Victoria, South Australia, WA and Queensland.

“The projects are designed to test the new technologies while improving water quality.

“This project could also help to protect the Great Barrier Reef by preventing valuable nutrients from being washed out to sea.

“This project gives farmers the tools and knowhow needed to continue with their great environmental work and be rewarded for it.

“This kind of investment will help Australia’s agriculture sector reach its goal become a $100 billion industry by 2030.”
