A university academic has been charged after allegedly orchestrating a fake harassment campaign against herself which resulted in significant security measures being implemented and an extensive police investigation.
In May 2019, a woman began receiving threatening letters allegedly in relation to the cancellation of a university course and a report was made to police.
Four letters were allegedly received by the woman between May and August 2019.
On Monday 16 September 2019, a woman reported that a threatening letter and clothing items had been left on her vehicle in Sydney’s south. Police were also told that a number of clothing items had been stolen from the backyard of her property.
In a separate incident on Wednesday 25 September 2019, a woman reported that a threatening letter and an item of clothing were sent to a business in Haymarket and a report was made to police.
Following extensive investigations, officers from Sydney City Police Area Command arrested a 49-year-old woman at a university in Haymarket just before midday on Friday 15 November 2019.
The woman, who is a university academic, was taken to Day Street Police Station where she was charged with dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, give false information person/property in danger, and false representation resulting in police investigation.
Police will allege in court that the woman sent threatening letters to herself between May and September 2019.
She was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court today (Wednesday 27 November 2019).
