University of Melbourne Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis AC appeared today at the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.

The following statement is attributable to Professor Davis.

The Royal Commission has heard powerful testimonies from Jewish students, staff and community members who have experienced antisemitism, hate and prejudice around the nation. The conduct you experienced is unacceptable and has no place in our society or on our campuses.

We acknowledge the courage of those who shared their experiences and express deep despair at what you have endured – this kind of conduct is antithetical to our values as a university. We continue to listen to, and learn from, your lived experience and perspectives.

The University of Melbourne deplores and stands against Antisemitism and any other form of racism, vilification or harassment.

I appreciated the chance to share today some of the initiatives taken at the University of Melbourne to address Antisemitism and racism in all its forms. I with the Royal Commission learned much from the hearings, and carry back to campus some practical suggestions raised during the hearing.

We continue to assess the effectiveness of the ways in which we address Antisemitism. We will not waver in our determination to ensure our students and staff can participate fully in university life without fear of vilification or harassment.

The Royal Commission has raised issues that are complex and confronting. It has also emphasised the importance of balancing freedom of speech and academic freedom with the responsibility to maintain a safe and respectful university environment. The hearings provide a strong reminder that social cohesion depends on respectful and considered interactions within and across our community.
