The University of Sydney has ranked fourth in Australia in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities 2023 and maintains its place in the top 100.
Released annually by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ranks 2500 universities worldwide and publishes the top 1000 results. The University ranked 72 in the world in the current rankings.
It uses six indicators to rank universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in the prestigious journals Nature and Science, papers indexed in prominent citation databases, and per capita performance of academics.
Among the University of Sydney’s highly cited academics is Professor Georgina Long who leads an extensive clinical trials team and laboratory, with a focus on targeted therapies and immune-oncology in melanoma. She is pioneering the development of an mRNA personalised cancer vaccine that has shown promising results for preventing cancer recurrence in patients with some forms of high-risk melanoma.
Another, Professor Albert Zomoya, is a globally recognised academic leader in the field of distributed and high-performance computing that underpins what most of us understand as ‘the cloud’. It is also fundamental to manufacturing systems, security and bioinformatics, including gene sequencing. These technologies are pervasive in modern life and Professor Zomoya’s work is of great practical value.
Since 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world’s top universities annually based on this methodology and objective third-party data. This year 35 universities never previously ranked in the top 1000 made it into that category.
The University performed strongly in the most recent ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, where Sydney recorded 14 research areas in the top 50 globally, including nursing (7th), telecommunication engineering (9th) and transportation science and technology (10th). This year’s results are still to be released.
Recently the University ranked equal 19th globally in the highly regarded 2024 QS World University Rankings, jumping 22 places from last year.
