Upgraded, accessible and world-class basketball stadium for Frankston district

Liberal Party Victoria

As interest in community sport skyrockets, the Liberals and Nationals will commit $15 million toward funding the expansion of the Frankston & District Basketball Association (FDBA) Stadium.

Community sport is booming in Melbourne’s South-East and along the peninsula, and basketball is no exception, with participation growing by thousands of registered players in recent times – more than the Victorian average.

The current stadium is at capacity during peak operating hours and competitions, is showing its age, and is no longer fit for contemporary sport industry design standards.

The Bayside Gymnastics Club is also searching for a new home that will provide a fit for purpose space for them to grow and expand their offerings.

The Liberals and Nationals’ co-contribution, alongside federal and council funding, will directly support participation growth across the Frankston district, as well as actively encourage further community engagement and interest.

Once completed, the new stadium precinct will include a total of 8 basketball courts, including show courts, a 1,000m2 gymnastics hall and training pit, improved changerooms, increased car parking, and fit-for-purpose, accessible amenities including spectator viewing.

Shadow Minister for Sport, Cindy McLeish, said the commitment is a sign of confidence for sport across the region.

“The delivery of the new stadium will address immediate capacity constraints, plan for future growth and welcome thousands of people from across the south-east and peninsula – bringing people together to do what they love.”

“We have a long-term commitment to delivering this long-overdue project and only a Liberals and Nationals Government will get on and get it done.”

Liberal Candidate for Frankston, Michael O’Reilly, was proud to commit to funding a city defining facility for the region.

“The upgraded stadium will be fit for purpose, well equipped and importantly accessible, thanks to our recent announcements of $2 fares for public transport and the expansion of the Frankston train line through to Baxter.”

“Only a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will deliver residents of Frankston and beyond, the world-class sporting infrastructure that they need and deserve.”
