- Cook Labor Government investing in education and early childhood development
The Cook Labor Government is serving up funding for school canteens, with 97 public schools to benefit from the first round of the Supporting School Canteens Program.
Education Minister Sabine Winton was at Deanmore Primary School today – one of the schools to receive funding – which will enable the school to purchase new kitchen appliances and utensils.
Applications for the small funding stream were for projects up to $50,000, with recipients in the first round sharing in more than $2.3 million of funding, delivering on a key election commitment by the Cook Labor Government.
This funding will support practical improvements, including new equipment and minor infrastructure upgrades, to better serve their school communities.
Applications from the large funding stream will be assessed by early Term 3,2026, with successful schools to be announced shortly after.
The Supporting School Canteens Program builds on the Cook Labor Government’s expansion of the School Breakfast Program and means more students will be able to access healthy and affordable foods in school canteens, giving them the best possible chance to learn.
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
“This investment reflects our strong commitment to supporting schools in creating environments where children can truly thrive.
“We know that good nutrition plays an important role in both learning and wellbeing, and school canteens are an important part of that.
“The significant volume of applications we received for this program is a testament to the dedication of schools and their commitment to improving student health and wellbeing.”
As stated by Scarborough MLA Stuart Aubrey:
“Canteens are at the heart of school communities, which is why I am proud to see schools like Deanmore Primary get the support they need to upgrade their canteens.
“I know this investment at Deanmore Primary School will be welcomed by parents and families across the school.
“This grant will help the school P&C to prepare, store, and distribute more healthy food to our students, giving them the best possible chance to learn.”
