Stinger nets are set to be rolled out at Townsville beaches this week as the weather warms and the stinger season begins.
The nets are being installed at major beaches in the city including Balgal Beach, The Strand, Magnetic Island and Pallarenda.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the stinger nets provide protection to residents and tourists who want to take advantage of our local beaches during the summer months.
“One of the benefits of living in a city with such a tropical climate is the ability to visit the beach year round, especially as the mercury really starts to rise in summer,” Cr Hill said.
“But as the water warms, we do need to be cautious of the creatures that can give a nasty sting while we’re swimming, so we install these nets to make sure it is safe to swim.
“The nets provide a high level of protection, but Council still recommends that our beachgoers use other precautions such as a stinger suit or carrying vinegar with them in case of any stings.”
Cr Hill said residents should also be wary of the sun while taking advantage of the warm weather.
“North Queensland is known as a skin cancer hot spot, and while we’re reminding swimmers to be safe at the beach, it is a timely reminder to all that we should be sun safe by following the slip, slop, slap, seek and slide method and minimise exposure to the sun,” she said.
Council contracts Uninet to deploy the nets at Townsville’s popular beaches.
The nets will be installed and will remain in place for around 6 months until the water begins to cool.
The nets will be installed as follows:
Monday 2 November 2020: Balgal Beach
Tuesday 3 November 2020: Magnetic Island (Picnic Bay, Horseshoe Bay)
Wednesday 4 November 2020: Pallarenda, North and South Strand
