Water meter renewals ramp up across Region

Rockhampton Regional Council and Fitzroy River Water (FRW) are ramping up efforts to ensure water meters across the Region are as accurate as they can be, and in many cases replacing meters that are no longer recording properly.

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said this commitment is an important way to not only improve the accuracy of the readings, so properties are billed correctly, but also to make people aware of just how much water they are using.

“Being able to accurately assess our water consumption is crucial – especially under drought conditions,” Cr Kirkland said.

“In many parts of our Region a large portion of water meters have reached, or are approaching, the end of their useful life – with up to 80% being more than ten years old, and some more than 15 years old.

“With so many meters to replace, this is understandably taking some time and we thank everyone for their ongoing cooperation while we commit to these improvements.

“As part of the replacement process, we are also assessing the condition of pipework associated with the meter arrangement and replacing that as well if needed.

“Our officers will door knock at time of the replacement and will work with customers to ensure any disruption to normal water supply is kept to a minimum – usually around 30 minutes.

“A recent state benchmarking report showed that out of 13 large regional water service providers, Rockhampton had the cheapest Typical Annual Residential Bill for Water and Sewerage.

“FRW is committed to continuing as a low cost and high quality water service provider for the community.”
