Will Rockliff commit to avoiding Liberty repeat at Bell Bay Aluminium?
The Rockliff Liberal Government’s failure to reach a workable power deal with the prospective buyer for Liberty Bell Bay saw 200 jobs in Tasmania disappear last week.
Now, with the larger Bell Bay Aluminium under pressure, the Premier needs to commit to avoiding a repeat.
With the departure of Hawthorn and closures of Liberty Bell Bay and Boag’s, Northern Tasmania can’t afford any more blows to the economy.
Bell Bay Aluminium supports more than 500 jobs directly, but its impact to the local economy is so much greater – with over 300 smaller businesses from across the state working with the company.
It also plays a crucial role in our energy system, helping stabilise the grid and absorbing a significant amount of Tasmania’s transmission costs.
So far, the Tasmanian Liberals have chosen to deflect responsibility for Bell Bay Aluminium and point the fingers at the Federal Government. Even their Federal Leader Angus Taylor has called this approach out, noting the state had to be part of the solution.
Can Premier Rockliff state his commitment to securing the future of Bell Bay Aluminium today?
