World Press Photo Exhibition comes to Perth

  • Free exhibition at the State Library from July 31 to August 20, 2021.
  • 45 of the World’s best press photos from 2020 are on display
  • The World Press Photo Exhibition which showcases the best visual journalism of the past year will be on show at the State Library of Western Australia from July 31 to August 20, 2021.

The free exhibition presents the winners of the 2021 World Press Photo Contest.

Since 1955, the annual contest has recognised professional photographers for the best pictures presented as individual photos or stories in eight categories captured in the past year of visual journalism.

In an unprecedented year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice protests around the globe, the winners share a diversity of interpretations and perspectives to these and other urgent issues such as the climate crisis, transgender people’s rights, and territorial conflicts.

This year, the contest saw 4,315 photographers from 130 countries enter 74,470 images.

An independent jury made up of 28 photography professionals selected the best pictures and stories of the year.

The exhibition features the works of 45 photographers from 28 countries.

The jury of the 2021 Photo Contest selected Mads Nissen’s photograph The First Embrace as the World Press Photo of the Year, and Habibi by Antonio Faccilongo as the World Press Photo Story of the Year.

As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

“Bringing this exhibition to Perth has been a coup for our State Library and demonstrates the McGowan Government’s commitment to activating and bringing new life to the Perth Cultural Centre.

“I urge anyone with an interest in photography or current affairs to come along and see this wonderful free exhibition.”
