The Minister for Local Government Minister, on advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, has advised that local government elections will go ahead as scheduled this October.
The Chief Health Officer has advised that October represents a period when risk is likely to be substantially lower than at present, and there are no compelling public health grounds for the elections to be delayed.
The Chief Health Officer has also worked closely with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) and is satisfied that appropriate physical distancing, cleaning and hygiene and workforce planning have all been considered and integrated into the VEC’s COVIDSafe plans.
The VEC have advised that election preparations are already well underway and that there are no administrative or procedural barriers to the election being held.
5 Important Things to Know for the Elections
- To vote, you must be correctly enrolled before 4 pm on Friday 28 August 2020.
- Voters will receive a ballot pack in early October.
- If you want to stand as a candidate, nominations open on Thursday 17 September and close at 12 noon on Tuesday 22 September.
- All candidates must complete Mandatory Candidate Training prior to nomination.
- Council is running two further Information Sessions for potential candidates on 29 August and 10 September.
