Young people sticking together like glue

The recently-formed Wodonga FReeZA Committee, made up of 12 young people, has been working on team bonding.

FReeZA is a Victorian Government initiative that supports young Victorians to get involved in their community by planning and running drug, alcohol and smoke-free events for other young people.

With the youngest member aged 14 and the oldest aged 25, the committee will work with Wodonga Council over the next 12 months to plan and run fun and engaging youth-focused events, including one major event, per year.

To help them on their journey, the committee took part in a workshop at Hyphen – Wodonga Library Gallery last week where they were taught skills such as building relationships with others, working together as a team and how to create an event and present it to others.

The workshop, facilitated by Tim Roebuck from Purple Glue, also looked at how young people can identify their own strengths, discussed ways to trust others and worked on round table brainstorming on youth events.

Wodonga Council Youth Officer Janet Banda labelled the workshop a success.

“It was such a success and as one participant said: ‘If only other young people knew how much fun we have, they would want to be a part of FReeZA’.”

The group will continue to brainstorm at the next meeting on July 22, after which the young people will collaborate with Hyphen to produce monthly youth events from August.
