75 stories in 75 days – Second World War 75 years on

Tomorrow marks the 75 day countdown to when Australia will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on 15 August – also known as Victory in the Pacific Day.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said this year we have a unique opportunity to capture and share the stories of Australians who served and experienced the Second World War.

“Some one million Australians served in the Second World War and remarkably around 12,000 veterans are still with us today – each of whom have a unique story to tell,” Mr Chester said.

“From tomorrow, in the lead-up to the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, a radio and social media series ’75 days, 75 stories’ will share a story about the experiences of those impacted by the Second World War – from veterans to widows and those on the home front.

“Our Second World War veterans left a powerful legacy and it is our responsibility to ensure their stories live on through generations to come, which is why I will be sharing 75 stories over the next 75 days on social media.

“I encourage Australians to share these stories, those of their own loved ones’ service, or perhaps events which you can recall or have been passed down through the generations from the Second World War.

“Together we can all honour and remember those who served in the Second World War and protected Australia from a very real threat.”

Follow Darren Chester MP on Facebook and Twitter to hear the 75 stories over 75 days.

The radio segments are available upon request from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) or can be found at 75 days, 75 stories. A new segment will be made available each day.

To ensure we can share the stories of these great men and women as widely as possible, all Australians are encouraged to use #OneInAMillion in their social media posts.
