Accelerating delivery of new social housing

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government, through Homes Tasmania, is committed to doing what matters to Tasmanians by building more quality homes faster and improving the housing system for Tasmanians in need.

The Australian Government’s Social Housing Accelerator program is providing funding of $50 million to deliver new social housing across Tasmania.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, welcomed this funding and said that Homes Tasmania has identified seven projects to be delivered under the program that will deliver around 125 new homes statewide.

“The projects will deliver remote Aboriginal housing and medium-density development in well located areas experiencing high demand,” Minister Street said.

“Under the Tasmanian Housing Strategy, we have committed to delivering more quality homes, faster, and more medium-density living is key to achieving this priority.

“Every Tasmanian deserves a roof over their head and our plan to build more houses faster is critical to achieving our vision to end homelessness in Tasmania and delivering a well-functioning housing system that provides safe, appropriate and affordable housing for all Tasmanians.

“The new homes built under the Social Housing Accelerator program will complement the Tasmanian Government’s planned target of 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.

“Through Homes Tasmania, we have already delivered 2,878 social and affordable homes as at 30 September 2023, with a further 860 new social housing, supported accommodation and crisis accommodation projects in the construction pipeline.”

These projects are scheduled to commence in early 2024 and be completed by 2026 and Homes Tasmania will partner with four community housing providers to deliver these projects, including:

  1. Flinders Island Aboriginal Association Inc.
  2. St Vincent De Paul and Amelie Housing
  3. Housing Choices Tasmania
  4. Centacare Evolve Housing

The Social Housing Accelerator Program is a good example of collaboration between State and Commonwealth Governments to achieve much needed housing outcomes for Tasmanians.
