Housing Minister Peter Tinley announced the winner of a three-month apartment living trial in Rivervale today, as part of an education program to raise awareness of housing diversity in Western Australia.
Medical receptionist Jorja Woolton beat a field of 100 potential candidates and will soon move into a new apartment at the Arbor North complex in Rivervale to start a three-month, rent-free apartment living trial.
Besides offering a fantastic opportunity to experience apartment living firsthand, Jorja’s feedback during and after the trial will help inform the design and development of future apartment projects.
The apartment is fully furnished by IKEA – she only needs to bring her belongings with her when she moves in on March 30.
Not-for-profit group WA Apartment Advocacy – which advocates for housing choice and the benefits of apartment living in WA – is running the trial in partnership with the Department of Communities, which owns the apartment.
The Department of Communities’ ‘Opening Doors’ program offers a range of affordable home ownership opportunities for Western Australians, including shared home ownership, full home ownership, land for sale, and house and land packages.

“High density living is on the rise in Perth and this trial is about breaking down some of the assumptions about apartment living.
“WA’s changing population demographic has seen housing needs shift in recent years. This has challenged the Government, industry and not-for-profit sectors to create more diverse housing options in responsibly planned and liveable communities.
“Perth is seeing a significant increase in apartments, townhouses and terrace housing, and the McGowan Government is addressing housing issues by using the principle of thoughtful density in the right forms and in the right locations.

“This trial is a fantastic way to expose people to apartment living who may not otherwise consider it an option for them.”
