Armadale Road transformation taking shape to ease congestion in southern suburbs

  • Significant upgrades along Armadale Road are progressing, creating 2,250 jobs
  • Contract awarded to deliver the bridge over Kwinana Freeway, connecting Armadale Road and North Lake Road
  • Final stage of Armadale Road widening underway, addressing congestion at busy Nicholson Road intersection
  • Construction on Thornlie-Cockburn Link to start this year as part of METRONET
  • Another milestone on a key McGowan Government election commitment
  • Armadale Road projects underway due to cancellation of flawed Perth Freight Link
  • The McGowan Government’s plans to relieve congestion along Armadale Road and the southern suburbs are progressing, with a contract awarded for delivery of the Armadale Road to North Lake Road bridge project.

The Armadale Access Alliance, a consortium comprising Laing O’Rourke and BG&E in partnership with Main Roads, will deliver the $134 million contract following a competitive tendering process.

The project will see the construction of a new bridge over Kwinana Freeway connecting Armadale Road and North Lake Road, creating 1,400 jobs. The existing interchange at Kwinana Freeway is the 10th most congested intersection in the metropolitan area.

Armadale Road will also be upgraded from Tapper Road to Kwinana Freeway, passing over the intersection of Tapper Road with a new bridge, and under the intersection of Solomon Road via a trench structure.

Both projects were announced as part of the ‘Boosting Jobs, Busting Congestion’ package launched by the McGowan Government, when funding was redirected from the flawed Perth Freight Link project.

Upon completion, the project will enable road users to bypass congestion at the Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre, addressing congestion at the Kwinana Freeway, Armadale Road and Beeliar Drive interchange, Perth’s fifth most congested intersection.

Construction of the project will begin in late 2019 following a period of detailed design.

In addition to the North Lake Road bridge, work is progressing on the final section of the $145 million Armadale Road widening project, which created 850 jobs.

The four-way signalised Armadale Road and Nicholson Road intersection will soon be converted to a roundabout with a four-lane bridge (two lanes in each direction) over Nicholson Road.

This will provide free-flowing traffic movement on Armadale Road, with on and off-ramps from the roundabout below providing connectivity.

A number of sections of new carriageway are also complete as part of the broader Armadale Road widening project from Tapper Road and Anstey Road, including:

    • Two kilometres of road between Ghostgum Avenue and Warton Road;
    • Two kilometres of road between Warton Road and west of Rossiter Avenue; and
    • Half a kilometre of road west of Anstey Road roundabout.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“The Armadale Road upgrade is just one of a number of significant projects underway in Perth’s southern suburbs, which will reduce congestion and lead to safer and more efficient journeys around our suburbs.

“Workers from the cancelled Roe 8 project were transferred to the Armadale Road dual carriageway project, allowing the project to be completed sooner.

“This is a vital election commitment that we are working hard to deliver.

“With the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link works getting underway later this year and planning underway for the Byford Extension, we can expect to see a transformation of our southern suburbs in coming years.

“These projects will create thousands of jobs for Western Australians, enhance productivity and support economic development by improving access to key commercial and industrial precincts.”

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

“The Armadale Road to North Lake Road Bridge project will tackle long wait times at one of the State’s worst pinch points and facilitate new investment and development opportunities in the Cities of Cockburn and Armadale.

“This project has only been made possible by the redirection of funding from the flawed Perth Freight Link project.

“The exciting transformation of the Armadale Road and Nicholson Road intersection will bring much needed relief to road users and we expect to see a significant reduction in journey times as a result of these works.

As stated by Jandakot MLA Yaz Mubarakai:

“The area around the Kwinana Freeway and Armadale Road interchange has been a source of frustration for motorists in Jandakot for a long time.

“By delivering on this commitment, the McGowan Government is easing congestion around Cockburn Central and along Armadale Road. For public transport users, the project will improve access to and from Cockburn Central train station by alleviating heavy congestion around the station car park during peak times.”

As stated by Armadale MLA Tony Buti:

“The Armadale Road widening will deliver significant benefits to people in Armadale and beyond, improving access to the freeway and CBD.

“The McGowan Government is getting on with the job of addressing congestion across Perth suburbs, and I look forward to the completion of the Armadale Road widening later this year.”
