Assault police at Tennant Creek

A Northern Territory Police officer was assaulted while performing her duties yesterday in Tennant Creek.

A vehicle stolen from Alice Springs early yesterday morning was found abandoned in Tennant Creek around 6:00pm.

Five youths, aged between 14 and 16, were apprehended for the theft a short time later.

During the arrest, one of the youths allegedly spat at the officer, striking her forehead.

The officer attended Tennant Creek Hospital and returned to duty shortly after.

A 14-year-old male was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and was bailed to appear in court on 14 April 2022.

The remaining youths were released under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 2005.

Later the same evening, a Suzuki Swift was stolen in Tennant Creek, with a 15-year-old male allegedly involved in the earlier offending identified through CCTV.

The youth was arrested again this morning and has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Acting Commander Kirsten Engels said, “Spitting on anyone is a disgusting act that will not be tolerated.”
