Australian Fire Service Medal Honours – Dianne Tynan

NT Government

The Australian Fire Service Medal is awarded to members who have rendered distinguished service as a member of the Australian Fire Service.

Dianne Tynan commenced with Bushfires NT in 1984 and has become a steadfast part of the Bushfires NT community. Dianne served as Brigade Captain for more than 40 years before recently retiring from the role, however, she remains the Fire Warden and a volunteer firefighter for the Elizabeth Valley Volunteer Brigade.

Beyond the fireground, Dianne was a founding member of the Bushfires NT Volunteer Association, a Territory Bushfires Council established to promote and assist with the safety and welfare of Bushfires NT volunteers in the Northern Territory. Throughout her service, she contributed to a range of committees and representative bodies that helped strengthen volunteer bushfire services across the NT.

Dianne has served on the fireground in hazardous and demanding conditions across the Darwin rural area while demonstrating exemplary leadership within the brigade, mentoring new volunteers and helping strengthen community resilience.

She has actively recruited, trained and mentored countless volunteers, ensuring the brigade maintains a high level of operational readiness and safety.

Dianne consistently champions inclusion and is a trailblazer for women in a traditionally male dominated field. She has been committed to developing the brigade’s capability and improving safety practices, and her advocacy and persistence helped secure improvements to brigade infrastructure, equipment and operational efficacy.

Commissioner of NT Fire and Emergency Services Andrew Warton said, “Our agency is built by such dedicated and selfless members, and Dianne is the embodiment of that commitment.

“For more than 40 years, Dianne has generously given her time, knowledge and leadership to support volunteers, strengthen community resilience and help keep Territorians safe.

“Her dedication to Bushfires NT, her fellow volunteers and the Darwin rural community continues to make a lasting difference and serves as an example to volunteers across the Territory.”
