Aitken Ward’s Councillor Carly Moore was re-elected Mayor of Hume City for a second term at Council’s 2019 Statutory Meeting last night.
In her acceptance speech, the life-long resident of Hume said the year ahead promised to be full of challenges and great opportunities and committed to working tirelessly to deliver an effective and high performing Council.
“It is with great pride that I am the Mayor of Hume City again and I thank my fellow Councillors for their trust and support in electing me,” Cr Moore said.
“It has been a busy year as Mayor but there is so much more to do; in short, my work is not yet done. Among my priorities for the year ahead will be improving the appearance and amenity of the City.
“The Hume Clean Taskforce – which I introduced earlier this year – will help ensure we have community and Council-led solutions to cleaning up and beautifying our City.
“I also know that Hume residents need and deserve easy access to services and infrastructure that can only be achieved when all parts of the municipality receive their fair share of funding. I will continue to work with our State and Federal Members of Parliament to ensure our residents are heard.
“Finally, I know our proud community is more than ever feeling the impacts of cost of living pressures and economic uncertainty. I will work to ensure that prudent fiscal management is at the forefront of all decisions made by Council and that Council plays a lead role in both job and economic attraction to Hume.”
Acknowledging the size and growth of Hume City, two Deputy Mayors were also elected for the first time. Meadow Valley Ward Councillor Karen Sherry and Jacksons Creek Ward Councillor Jack Medcraft will share the honour for the 2019/20 Mayoral term.
“In a City of this size, we want to ensure the needs of our growing community are being heard and met,” Cr Moore said.
“Having two Deputy Mayors and a leadership team which now represents all three wards, will help us to better engage with and represent residents in all corners of our City. I congratulate and look forward to working more closely with both Cr Sherry and Cr Medcraft in the year ahead.
“I am already proud of what this Council has achieved during its term of office and I look forward to the next year with excitement and enthusiasm.”
On another note, Jacksons Creek Ward Councillor Ann Potter officially announced that she would not contest the 2020 Local Government Election.
“Over 18 years in Council, Cr Potter has made a significant contribution to the Hume community – particularly as Mayor in 2002/03,” Cr Moore said.
“It has been an honour to work closely with Cr Potter during this Council term and I sincerely thank her for her service and wish her, and her family, all the best.”
