Rockhampton Regional Council’s plan for growing the Northern Suburbs is centred around keeping the character of those communities while allowing for more growth to take place.

Planning and Regulatory Councillor Grant Mathers said if Glendale, Glenlee and Rockyview were to transfer to the Rockhampton Region, residents would continue to enjoy their rural residential lifestyle.

“We know that people who live in those suburbs want a particular lifestyle and that would absolutely continue under Rockhampton Regional Council,” Cr Mathers said.

“Our Council would preserve existing rural residential areas and would look at further rural residential development in areas of Rockyview. It’s important to note in Glenlee there would also be a clear separation for new residential due to the rail line and Dawson Road.

“The key is getting the balance right and allowing for new growth while ensuring we keep the character of those existing rural residential areas and that is exactly what our plan is.

“More homes means more infrastructure and more services which will benefit all residents in those areas. At the same time, we’re not going to grow residential estates right onto the doorstop as some people have asked.

“We are already planning for that growth which includes protecting the lifestyle of current residents, noting that it will be years into the future before we see that new development happening.

“If you are a resident in those areas, I want you to know that the next step in all of this is to hear from yourselves about what you want and what you want the future of that area to be.

“We want to hear from current residents so we can understand what services and infrastructure they want and what concerns they have.

“We want to hear from you because building a community only happens effectively if we talk to and understand want residents’ needs are.

“We will be announcing a BBQ event next week to talk to residents about their issues and needs, and I’d invite everyone in the Northern Suburbs to come along. If you can’t make it, please make contact because we want to hear from you,” Cr Mathers said.
