Some bright home-grown literary talents have been recognised at City of Darwin’s Young Territory Author Awards.
Now in their 32nd year, the awards were initiated to help encourage and develop literacy among young people in the Northern Territory.
More than 100 aspiring young authors presented their works for appraisal by an independent four-member judging panel.
The awards for the best of the young writers were presented at a ceremony held yesterday.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatsklais said it took a fair bit of bravery for young people to put their ideas on a page and have them judged.
“All 115 of this year’s entrants deserve to be congratulated for both their writing and their courage,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“This year, the judges were impressed and delighted by the range and ambition of the works presented to them.”
Eleven-year-old Freya Galati took out the overall winner award for her work, June Girls, described by the judges as a “beautifully written story”.
The judges went on to say Freya had reflected “very impressive and mature writing with memorable phrases and an engaging storyline”.
Other winners this year were:
- Liora Devlin-Aylott, eight and under
- Ruby Hughes, 9-12
- Olivia Wall, 13-15
- Journey Kelly, 16-18
All entries in the 2022 Young Territory Author Awards will be on display at Casuarina Library and available to borrow, along with entries from previous years.
