The Central Goldfields Art Gallery’s September Art Talk, happening Wednesday September 7 from 10.30 to 11.30am, will give an insight into an exciting aspect of the Gallery’s redevelopment, the Djaara Interpretive Garden.

Djaara members from the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation will talk about how the landscape design for the new outdoor space of the Gallery was developed and how it has responded to Djaara values.

The cultural elements to be embedded at Central Goldfields Art Gallery will recognise and acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners, celebrate the living culture of the Dja Dja Wurrung Peoples and share significant cultural heritage and demonstrate the continuation of all relationships with Country.

Designs for the garden were developed through an Djaara Wartaka process to ensure Dja Dja Wurrung people led the development of the cultural themes embedded within the design.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Chris Meddows-Taylor said the Garden is an exciting aspect of the Gallery’s redevelopment.

“The Central Goldfields Art Gallery Djaara Interpretive Garden will foster recognition and respect of Dja Dja Wurrung culture. This exciting and important space will become a new and beautiful outdoor component of the visitor experience to the Gallery.”

In May 2022, the redevelopment project attracted $225,000 for Stage 2&3 of the Djaara Interpretive Garden through the Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund announced as part of the Victorian State Budget 2022-23. Council has committed a further $75,000 to the project to bring the total to $300,000.

This process was facilitated by the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation (DDWCAC) and supported by Landscape Architects, 3Acres.

The September Art Talk will place at the Maryborough Resource Centre Atrium.

The Central Goldfields Art Gallery Art Talks are delivered in partnership with Maryborough U3A Inc.
