Chapter closes on 2023 Premier’s Reading Challenge

  • More than 23,200 students took part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge 2023
  • Students collectively read more than 363,000 books
  • Challenge encourages more students to reap the benefits of reading

Students from across Western Australia have read a total of more than 363,000 books in just four months – a new record for the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

More than 23,200 students from 811 WA schools took part in the challenge, which ran from May to September. Hundreds of school staff also signed up to be Challenge Champions – an initiative where school staff become ambassadors to promote the program and encourage students to get involved.

Premier Roger Cook and Education Minister Dr Tony Buti today presented the winning schools and students with prizes at a ceremony at Parliament House.

Students who read the most books in each age category received a certificate, trophy, and a family travel voucher to spend on an adventure within WA. Winning schools received a framed certificate and an author workshop experience.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

“To have more than 23,200 students involved in the Premier’s Reading Challenge is an incredible achievement.

“Those participants made the 2023 Challenge a record-breaking success, with the biggest ever number of books logged this year.

“Congratulations to everyone involved. I hope you enjoyed discovering new stories and adventures through the joy of reading.”

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“Reading has so many social, emotional, and academic benefits, so it was wonderful to see more than 363,000 books were read by students throughout the State.

“Not only does reading keep children entertained, but it helps them to further develop the critical literacy skills they learn in the classroom.”
