Christmas road safety message – Life is Gift

In the lead up to Christmas, South Australia Police is reminding people to drive safely on South Australian roads.

Road users are urged to take heed of the Christmas campaign message as a call to reflect on the impact road trauma has made on so many families and communities this year and remember that ‘Life is a Gift.’

Acting Officer in Charge of Traffic Services Branch, Inspector Michael Turnbull said that 110 lives have been lost on South Australian roads and 882 people have been seriously injured.

“This Christmas we’re asking all road users to remember ‘life if a gift’. Unfortunately road crashes have all too often led to the loss of a life, or altered someone’s life irreparably with a serious injury this year. This impact not only has a life changing effect on their life, but their family friends and loved ones,” Inspector Turnbull said.

“South Australia Police members will be working day and night across the state throughout the festival season with a focus on keeping the roads safe.

“This Christmas I urge all road users- from children riding a new bike, L and P Plate drivers, experienced drivers, truck drivers, motorcycle drivers, cyclists, country drivers, metropolitan drivers to senior drivers- do your part by following the road rules, driving to the conditions and using the road with care for yourself and others.”

Minister for Police, Joe Szakacs said the campaign delivered a timely reminder of the importance of exercising road safety.

“Making the right decisions on the road is as important during the Christmas period as it is at any other point of the year,” Minister Szakacs said.

“Life is a gift, and I urge everyone travelling on our roads to not lose sight of that fact. Every death on our roads is tragic and brings with it a trail of trauma and pain. Think of your loved ones and drive safely on our roads, so that you’re with us next Christmas to celebrate.”
