The City of Greater Bendigo has engaged a specialist consultant to undertake some investigations and concept design work on the Kennington Reservoir dam wall.
City of Greater Bendigo Manager of Engineering Brett Martini said the dam wall, which was originally constructed in 1861 had its last major upgrade and repair in 1929 and is currently showing signs of fatigue.
“Kennington reservoir is an ornamental lake that is heavily used for public recreation purposes. It’s a valuable asset for the community and the City is taking the necessary steps to ensure the public can continue to safely use it into the future,” Mr Martini said.
“Recent condition reports on the dam wall has highlighted some issues with the outlet and surface treatments currently across the site. To ensure the wall can continue to perform its function safely the City will undertake a more detailed investigation into those issues and then determine the scale of any repairs or upgrade works that are needed.
“The City is currently working with a consultant to undertake the investigation, concept design, and detailed design of the project.
“Investigation work will include a site survey and some exploratory digging on the wall which will take place from mid to late November. This work will require closure of the wall’s pathways to the public for two to three days and the City apologises for any inconvenience this work will cause.”
Signage and barriers will be erected onsite to warn of the closures closer to the date.
“When the investigative work has been completed the City will develop concept designs for any repair works to be undertaken which will be completed by late January.
“The City will consult with the community in February about the concept options and about establishing the planning requirements for the project. Detailed design and cost estimation work is expected from the consultant by late April.”
