Clean Up Australia Day activities target city’s parks and waterways

Orange Council

Orange City Council is encouraging everyone to roll up their sleeves and get involved in Clean Up Australia Day activities on Sunday 6 March.

Clean Up Australia Day is the country’s largest community-based environmental day of action and has been inspiring communities to clean up and conserve the environment for more than 30 years.

Council will hold a clean-up from 10am to 1pm at Elephant Park and through surrounding areas such as Moulder Park, which runs along Blackmans Swamp Creek to the old netball courts.

Volunteers can simply turn up at Elephant Park off Woodward Street. Drinks and snacks will be able to pick-up at the registration site.

STRONG SUPPORT: A good turnout to last year’s Clean Up Australia Day activities.

Other clean-ups are being held across the city by individuals and community groups at sites such as the skate park and velodrome, Rotary Park, Clifton Grove, Mullion Creek and Lords Place.

Last year about 70 community members participated in clean-up activities, collecting 35 bags of rubbish as well as shopping trolleys, timber pallets, bicycles and scooters, and even a small safe.

Environmental Sustainability Policy Committee Chair Cr David Mallard would like to see more residents out there doing their bit for the environment this year.

“This type of event is great for getting people of all ages to out there into the community, making a big difference and raising awareness of the amount of litter that makes it into our public spaces and waterways,” Cr Mallard said.

“There is a long way to go to solve the litter problem around the city, but every step helps. We can all do our bit every day by picking up litter around our own homes and neighbourhoods.”

The introduction of the Return and Earn container deposit scheme in 2017 has halved the amount of bottles and cans littered in NSW.

However, this year Clean Up Australia predicts the amount of pandemic-related litter will make up a significant portion of litter collected, with a surge in discarded single-use plastics, disposable face masks and coffee cups.
