Collective action keeping ReefClean

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The ReefClean program continues to play a vital role in protecting the Great Barrier Reef from the threat of marine debris, by stopping tonnes of debris from reaching the Reef every year.

As highlighted in the annual ReefClean report, 296 clean-up events were run last year covering 1,987 hectares of the Great Barrier Reef region, with 23.7 tonnes of debris collected by 4,139 volunteers.

A total of 97.5 tonnes of marine debris has now been collected since the program began in 2019. That’s the equivalent weight of three humpback whales.

Funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust, the program is a great example of tangible, on the ground actions being undertaken to manage threats to the Reef.
