Community groups, schools, small-to medium-sized enterprises, and local governments can apply for litter grants of up to $10,000 for major initiatives or regional projects, or $5,000 for local area projects.
The grants, provided by Keep Australia Beautiful Council (KABC), support projects and initiatives that focus on changing littering behaviour.
Successful projects will help reduce litter at events, sporting and recreation venues, roadsides, waterways, and shopping and commercial precincts. They will also target the incorrect disposal of cigarette butts and takeaway food containers.
Projects funded through the previous round included a trial of a refuse collection device in a Perth waterway, campaigns to reduce cigarette butt litter and an ocean adventure show aimed at 3 to 9-year-olds about the impact of litter on oceans and beaches.
As part of the 2022 grant round launch in Dampier, KABC assisted a 2021 grant recipient, Pilbara Dive and Tours, with their under and above water clean-up. Fifty volunteers participated in the event, ten of whom will complete the underwater clean-up.
Each year a large amount of rubbish enters the local waterways in Dampier because of littering. There is also a significant amount of ocean litter in the Dampier Archipelago, with items found to have travelled from as far as Indonesia. KABC is working with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and a wide range of other organisations to address the issue.
