Fire makes the news when it burns out of control in places like Australia and California, but not all fires are destructive. Controlled fires are critical land management tools in mid-Atlantic states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Erica Smithwick, E. Willard and Ruby S. Miller Professor of Geography at Penn State, will discuss “burning” land management decisions and fire-related solutions at the next EarthTalks seminar at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, in 112 Walker Building at University Park. Smithwick’s presentation is part of the spring 2020 EarthTalks series, “Societal Problems, EESI Science towards Solutions.” The series features scientists from Penn State’s Earth and Environmental Systems Institute and explores the human impacts on the global environment and how to apply this knowledge to decision-making. The series runs every Monday through April 27 in 112 Walker Building.
