Cradle Mountain revitalisation project stalls

  • Cradle Mountain revitalisation project has stalled
  • Project is crucial for growth in Tasmania’s north
  • Premier must come clean on the status of the project
  • The Government appears to have dropped the ball on a major component of the project to revitalise the Cradle Mountain visitor experience, putting much needed regional jobs at risk.

Today in Parliament, Labor Member for Braddon, Anita Dow, said this important project appeared to have stalled.

“Cradle Mountain is one of our premier tourism attractions and the revitalisation of the Cradle Mountain visitor experience and investment in this iconic site is absolutely critical for the growth of our regional economy,” Ms Dow said.

“The Government promised that investors for the Visitor Gateway Precinct at Cradle Mountain would be announced mid-2019, but it’s now March 2020 and we still have no news from the expression of interest process.

“The project will create much needed regional jobs and the local community and tourism industry deserve certainty.

“The Premier must reveal how far behind schedule the Cradle Mountain Revitalisation project is and when he plans to release the names of the investors.”

Ms Dow said Peter Gutwein’s unusual questioning in Parliament as to why a member for Braddon was taking an interest in a project in the electorate of Lyons showed a complete lack of understanding about the development.

“The Cradle Coast Authority lead and advocated strongly for this project citing the economic benefits it would deliver to Tasmania’s north and north west,” Ms Dow said.

“It’s an important development for all of Tasmania, not just one electorate.

“But it does pose the question – would Peter Gutwein have fast-tracked the process if the project was in the marginal electorate of Braddon?”
