The Territory Labor Governments $45 million redevelopmentof John Stokes Square, which will support the Territorys construction industryand create local jobs, has taken a significant step forward with the release ofa tender for contractors to clear the site.

Work has already started on the design of a new PoliceStation, with Jackman Gooden Architects commissioned to prepare a concept readyfor construction later this year.

The redevelopment will see the existing 75 public housingdwellings replaced with new homes specifically designed for seniors, or peopleliving with disabilities.

The relocation of the Nightcliff Police Station to a newpurpose-built facility will assist police in keeping the community safe.

This work will create a reinvigorated area, providing apedestrian friendly link between the Nightcliff Village and Nightcliff ShoppingCentre, open space and the expansion of local services.

Demolition is expected to begin in late May and the NorthernTerritory Government will consult with the community to find the best designoption for this important project.

As stated by the Local Member for Nightcliff, NatashaFyles:

Creating local jobs is the number one priority for thisGovernment and this $45 million redevelopment will support around 240 jobs.

This is what industry has been asking for, creating realcertainty for their workforce, enabling business to plan ahead we aredelivering on that.

Every Territorian has a right to feel safe and expect theirhomes, businesses and property to be secure.

The John Stokes Facility is a known hotspot for crime andanti-social behaviour and, as the Local Member, I have heard clearly theconcerns from businesses and residents for a redeveloped precinct to improvesafety, security and the local amenity.
