Motorists across Queensland are being urged to drive to conditions as wet weather hits parts of the state this Easter long weekend.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said with rainy conditions drivers need to take extra caution on the roads.
“The Easter period often means travelling to unfamiliar locations, and with wet weather predicted across the long weekend, we’re urging everyone to take extra care,” Mr Bailey said.
“Unfortunately, as of last night, three lives have already been lost on our roads this Easter, and a number of crashes have occurred right throughout Queensland.
“Before you head out onto the road with family and friends, look at the forecast and plan your drive. Avoid driving until the weather clears up.
“If you get caught in a quick moving storm or rain event, drive to conditions and:
- Keep a safe speed to avoid skidding and aquaplaning;
- Do not drive onto roads covered with water, even partially covered roads;
- Keep a safe distance between you and the car in front of you;
- Avoid sudden breaking, accelerating or turning to reduce your chances of skidding; and
- Use your air conditioner to keep your windscreen clear of condensation.
“As always, don’t speed, don’t drive fatigued, wear your seatbelt and avoid distractions of any kind.
“When a crash occurs, families and friends suffer, and the investigations into these terrible crashes are left to the brave emergency workers who wish each visit to one of these scenes will be their last.
“We want every Queenslander to stay safe and get to their destination this Easter.”
